Preseason Opener Thriller: Panthers Edge Cardinals 33-30!
The new NFL preseason kickstarted with pure gridiron fireworks! In an edge-of-your-seat matchup featuring lead changes, clutch rookie drives, and a walk-off touchdown run at the buzzer, the Carolina Panthers pulled off a thrilling victory over the Arizona Cardinals.
First Half Battle: Rookie Quarterbacks Take Center Stage
Both franchises opened the contest with disciplined defensive pressure, leading to three consecutive punts in early possessions. The Cardinals finally broke the stalemate late in the first quarter when rookie passer Carson Beck orchestrated a masterclass 13-play, 96-yard scoring drive. Running back Trey Benson capped off the drive early in the second quarter with a goal-line rush to put Arizona ahead.
Carolina answered back with power running. A heavy-formation package set up rookie runner AJ Johnson for a 1-yard touchdown plunge to tie the game. Arizona pushed back as Carson Beck connected with Jayden Higgins on a deep 49-yard bomb into the red zone, followed by a 5-yard touchdown strike. However, Panthers quarterback Haynes King rallied his offense before halftime, hitting Reid for a 15-yard touchdown pass to deadlock the score at 17-17 heading into the locker room.
Second Half Shootout: Field Goals & Fourth-Quarter Drama
Defense resurfaced in the third quarter as both teams traded mid-field turnovers. Arizona capitalized on a failed 4th-and-5 conversion attempt to drill a field goal and reclaim a 20-17 advantage. But Carolina refused to back down.
Facing a daunting 3rd-and-15 late in the third quarter, Haynes King converted a crucial pass under heavy pressure. Exploiting a defensive penalty, the Panthers marched inside the 10-yard line and punched in a 5-yard touchdown catch by Thomas, surging ahead 24-20.
The final five minutes presented non-stop drama. Arizona responded with a 37-yard field goal to trim the deficit to one point. On their next drive, backup passer Kedon Slovis guided Arizona down to the 1-yard line, delivering a touchdown pass with just 1:55 remaining. With the extra point good, the Cardinals held a seemingly comfortable 30-27 lead.
The Walk-Off Buzzer Beater!
With only 1 minute and 55 seconds on the clock, Haynes King mounted a legendary final drive. On a critical 3rd-and-14 near midfield, King exploited a gap in middle coverage, scrambling for 26 yards to keep the drive alive. With seconds remaining at the goal line, King executed a flawless play-action fake, diving over the pylon as time expired for a dramatic 33-30 walk-off victory for the Panthers!
